This Is How The 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06’s N/A V8 Delivers 670 HP

The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 was unveiled earlier in the week and promises to be unlike any other ‘Vette before it, largely thanks to its engine.

We have known that the C8 Z06 would feature a 5.5-liter naturally-aspirated V8 ever since the Corvette C8.R race car was unveiled with this same basic engine in October 2019. Recent rumors suggested the engine would be tuned to around the 617 hp mark for the Z06, so you can imagine our surprise when the car was announced with no less than 670 hp and 460 lb-ft (623 Nm).

That horsepower figure makes this 5.5-liter flat-plane crank engine the most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 ever used by a production car. It also gives the new car a 20 hp advantage over the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 used by the C7 Z06. Just how was Chevy able to extract so much power from this smaller-capacity engine without relying on forced induction?

To show how this was achieved, Engineering Explained has released an intriguing video that details all of the technology packed into this engine.

A key reason why the engine is so powerful is that it revs to 8,600 rpm and achieves peak power at 8,400 rpm, 2,000 rpm higher than the C7’s 6.2-liter V8. The car’s high-revving nature has been achieved through the use of a flat-plane crankshaft and the use of a short stroke.

Chevrolet has also engineered the engine with double-overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. It also featured dual valve springs, solid lifts, titanium intake valves, and sodium-filled steel exhaust valves. A complex intake manifold has also been designed with dual throttle bodies, dual plenums, three center valves, and four trumpets on each side.

Chevy Dealer Tech Took Customer’s C8 Corvette For A 148-MPH Street Racing Joyride

If you have a GM vehicle equipped with the Performance Data Recorder (PDR), this might be your sign to start using it when you bring your car in for service. After the incident this past June involving a Chevrolet technician taking a customer’s C8 Corvette out for a 104-mph (167 km/h) joyride, a similar situation has has occurred, this time with street racing at speeds close to 150 mph (241 km/h)

The car was brought in to the dealership for an unknown, potentially serious engine noise that necessitated it be taken in on a tow truck. After the technician working on it resolved the issue, which apparently turned out to be a loose spark plug, he rightfully took it out for a test drive to make sure everything was in working order. However, what that technician didn’t know was that the car’s PDR was active, and it was recording the whole ordeal that followed.

After some seemingly normal driving, the tech made his way onto the highway. Once he had enough room, he opened up the Corvette to about 115 mph (185 km/h), and did the same again on another highway. And if that wasn’t enough, the PDR video then shows him engaging in a street race with a Dodge Charger, weaving in and out of traffic and reaching speeds of up to 148 mph (238 km/h) at one point.

According to The Drive, after the owner found out what had been done with his car, the dealership offered him $500 worth of exterior and interior detailing, but seeing as the car was virtually brand new and already had a paint protection film installed, he was able to negotiate for an extended warranty. The owner told The Drive that he will have “no ill-will” against the dealership if they truly uphold their agreement.

The full video of the test drive has since been removed, but you can watch the street racing part, which was reuploaded to Reddit, below.

Hear The 2023 C8 Corvette Z06 “Supercar” Roar Its V8 Ahead Of Its Debuts This Fall

After years of spy photos and speculation, the wait is almost over as Chevrolet has officially announced plans to introduce the 2023 Corvette Z06 this fall.

Described as a “supercar that will put the world on notice,” the 2023 Corvette Z06 promises to be an American exotic that features a mid-mounted 5.5-liter flat-plane crank V8 as well as an assortment of other performance upgrades.

The former can be heard in a new teaser video, which shows the car driving on the track and then on rural backroads. While the car itself can’t be seen, spy photographers have already captured it on numerous occasions and it will adopt a sportier design that echoes the Corvette C8.R.

Among the changes will be a more aggressive front fascia, aerodynamic side skirts and a prominent rear wing. We can also expect a revised interior with sport seats, Z06 badging and carbon fiber trim.

Of course, the real star of the show is the all-new 5.5-liter V8 engine. Chevrolet hasn’t said much about it, but it was developed alongside the one used in the Corvette race car and rumors have suggested it could produce as much as 617 hp (460 kW / 626 PS) and 480 lb-ft (651 Nm) of torque. That would be a significant improvement over the standard model which has up to 495 hp (369 kW / 502 PS) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque, and can rocket from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 2.9 seconds.

That being said, the car could be less powerful than its predecessor which had a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 with 650 hp (485 kW / 659 PS) and 650 lb-ft (881 Nm) of torque. However, it should be significantly faster so drivers won’t have much to complain about other than the lack of a manual transmission.

Chevrolet Drops 1LE Package From 4- and 6-Cylinder Camaros

Chevrolet Camaro LT models will no longer be offered with the 1LE performance package for the 2022 model year. That means that the 1LE package will only be offered on SS and ZL1 models that are V8-powered.

GM Authority first reported that the 1LE performance package would no longer be offered on the smaller-engined cars and we confirmed the decision with GM independently.

“Chevrolet is retiring the Turbo 1LE and V6 1LE from the Camaro line when model year 2021 concludes in order to produce more in-demand models like the LT1, which has risen to be nearly a quarter of Camaro sales since hitting showrooms in model year 2020,” a Chevrolet spokesperson told Carscoops. “The Camaro SS 1LE and ZL1 1LE track stars will continue with nationwide availability into model year 2022.”

First introduced in 2019, the Turbo 1LE model matched high-performance parts to the four-cylinder Camaro. The model made 275 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and was offered exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.

The package also offers larger-diameter front and rear stabilizer bars, customer dampers, Brembo brakes, stiffer cradle bushings at the rear, a suede flat-bottom steering wheel, Recaro seats, and more.

In all, the 1LE package was good enough to make the 335 hp Camaro V6 1LE nearly as fast around Virginia International Raceway as a 707 hp Dodge Charger Hellcat in 2016, according to Road & Track.

The LT1, meanwhile, features a naturally aspirated V8 engine making 455 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque, but aggressive lease deals mean it can be had for a smaller monthly payment than a Turbo 1LE, which makes less than half as much power.

2022 Corvette C8 Starts From AU$144,990 In Australia, Sales Start In Q4

Australian enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the right-hand drive (RHD) C8 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray ever since it was unveiled in mid-2019 and finally, pricing and availability details for the car have been announced.

Set to be sold by the newly-established General Motors Speciality Vehicles (GMSV), the 2022 Chevrolet Corvette will be offered in five flavors, kicking off with the 2LT trim that’s priced from AU$144,990 (US$110,189) plus on-road costs.

Those who want something more will be able to buy the 3LT trim level from AU$160,500 (US$121,976) plus on-roads. The hardtop range will then be topped out by a special Carbon Edition, pricing details of which have not yet been announced. Importantly, all C8 Corvette models imported into Australia will come as standard with the must-have Z51 Performance pack that includes magnetically-controlled suspension, enlarged Brembo brakes, a new rear spoiler, electronically-controlled limited-slip differential, and a unique exhaust. Aussie cars also land standard with a front-axle lift system.

Details about the Corvette Carbon Edition are limited at this stage but it will reportedly receive hand-picked interior trims, distinctive wheels, a bespoke finish on the brake calipers, and an ‘owners pack’, details of which have yet to be confirmed.

The 2022 Corvette will also be offered in Convertible guise with the same 2LT and 3LT trim levels, each priced at an extra AU$15,000 (US$11,399) over comparable coupe models.

Chevrolet will begin producing right-hand drive Corvettes for the Australian market in the final quarter with deliveries expected just before Christmas.

“The Corvette is one of the world’s most recognizable sports cars and over-delivers (on) performance expected of such a machine. It is the epitome of a true icon as it has heritage, performance and unparalleled desirability – generation after generation,” GMSV head Jo Stogiannis said in a statement.

Semi Truck Smashes Parked Chevy Tahoe While Trying To Maneuver

Trucks are big and cumbersome to drive. But most people would expect those driving these trucks to be able to maneuver their big rigs in tricky situations. However, that is not always the case, as is made evident by this video.

The incident occurred on March 9th in Sayville, New York. In the video, a semi truck is shown reversing down a main street, reportedly to let an ambulance go by. Behind the truck is a Chevy Tahoe parked at the curb, and the truck driver is inching closer every second. Curiously, he seems to keep changing his speed, which might suggest he had already seen the Tahoe. However, the carnage that follows all but confirms he did not.

Much to the dismay of the girls recording, the truck reverses directly into the Tahoe, smashing the SUV’s rear door. We also wouldn’t be surprised if the front door sustained some damage as well. One girl chimes in, “That poor person’s car”, and we’d be inclined to agree, as one could only imagine the owner’s reaction after they returned to their car to see a massive gouge in the door.

Some people in the video’s comments were wondering why the girls didn’t honk to alert the truck driver, while others claimed they did, and that this clip was just an abridged version of the full video. Regardless, it seems as if the Tahoe’s alarm did that job for them, albeit a little too late, and all we can do is be thankful that no one was in the SUV at that time.

Is The Convertible The C8 Corvette You Should Go For?

In times gone by, convertible variants of sports cars and supercars were often viewed as inferior to their fixed-top siblings due to the loss in chassis rigidity and the added heft they had to carry around. However, things have changed in recent years and the C8 Corvette Convertible is proof of that.

The C8 Corvette Stingray Coupe has been the one that’s generated the most amount of interest over the past 18 months, but as this review reveals, the Convertible may actually be even better.

When developing the mid-engined Corvette, Chevrolet knew from the very outset that it would sell the car in both coupe and convertible guises. As such, they engineered the vehicle’s platform to be strong enough to support the lack of a fixed roof without having to add heaps of structural reinforcements like many other convertibles. The end result is a car that weighs just 80 lbs (36 kg) more than the hardtop.

That’s not the only thing the Corvette Convertible has going for it. Whereas all of its competitors lack any kind of luggage space behind the cockpit, the ‘Vette retains the same trunk as the coupe.

The reviewers are full of praise for the car, complementing everything from its pricing to its handling and straight line performance. They add that the Corvette Convertible can be driven year-round and say that none of its competitors can match its exotic feel.

This Customized Chevy HHR Pickup Channels The El Camino

The 2000’s were rife with retro-inspired models including the Chrysler PT Cruiser and reborn Mini Cooper.

Chevrolet also got in on the fun as they introduced the SSR and HHR. While the latter wasn’t as interesting as the convertible pickup, one HHR owner decided to transform their five-door hatchback into a two-door truck.

Currently listed on Facebook Marketplace for $6,500 (£5,005 / €5,515), the model is a part HHR and part pickup. Details are limited, but the rear doors give way to a custom truck bed that follows the lines of the original model.

This gives the truck a high quality appearance, but there are some downsides. Most notably, there’s no drop down tailgate or rear window. The latter decision likely creates sizeable blind spots, but it freed the owner to have a bald eagle graphic on the back of the passenger compartment.

The interior largely carries over, but cheap-looking bowtie badges have been added above the door sills. The bowtie design can also be found on the back wall which is covered in some rather tragic upholstery.

Since the truck is based on a 2010 HHR and is FlexFuel capable, it presumably has a 2.2- or 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. The smaller engine is rated at 155 hp (116 kW / 157 PS), while the larger unit develops 172 hp (128 kW / 174 PS).

Regardless of what’s under the hood, the truck has 265,000 miles (426,476 km) on the odometer. That’s a lot but, if you’re in the market for an HHR-based pickup, this is one of your only options.

Mitsubishi Outlander And Eclipse Cross Are The Slowest-Selling New Vehicles In The U.S.

The two slowest-selling new vehicles in the United States are both Mitsubishis, a new study has found.

During a recent analysis of 4.4 million new and used vehicles sold throughout the United States in the period from March through June 2020, it was discovered that the Mitsubishi Outlander and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross are the slowest-selling new vehicles in the country. On average, it takes 197.7 days for an Outlander and 187.7 days for an Eclipse Cross to sell.

It is hardly a surprise that the Mitsubishi Outlander is so difficult to shift as it has been in production in third-generation guise, with minimal changes, since 2014 and there are many newer and more modern alternatives on the market.

Speaking about it, iSeeCars chief executive Phong Ly said: “The Mitsubishi Outlander compact SUV saw a 76 percent decrease in sales in the second quarter of 2020 compared to 2019, which shows that there isn’t high demand for the vehicle, despite its affordability and unique features like a third-row seat.”

Read Also: Next-Gen Mitsubishi Outlander Will Debut In Early 2021, Go On Sale Shortly Thereafter

It is somewhat of a surprise to see the Eclipse Cross so high up on the list, though, as it is still relatively new. However, like other Mitsubishi models, it is extremely basic and clearly failing to cash-in on demand for SUVs and crossovers in the United States.

The third slowest-selling new vehicle is the Buick Encore with an average sale time of 170 days. It was followed by the Nissan Frontier (158.3 days), Chevrolet Impala (153.1 days), Nissan Altima (151.9 days), Nissan Armada (151.2 days), Cadillac Escalade ESV (151.1 days), Range Rover Velar (150.4 days), and the Infiniti QX60 (149.9 days.)

It sure is not good for car manufacturers to have their new vehicles sitting around for so long. On the flip side, shoppers may find some good savings with such vehicles as dealerships should be eager to get them off their lots.

Chevy Camaro And Mercedes-AMG C 63 Impounded In Canada For Doing Double The Speed Limit

A Chevrolet Camaro and a Mercedes-AMG C 63 were impounded in Canada over the weekend after being caught driving at more than double the speed limit.

According to local reports, the two vehicles were spotted traveling at high speed in Nova Scotia and reached speeds of 232 km/h (144 mph) in areas of highway where the posted speed limit was 110 km/h (68 mph).

Motor Illustrated reports that the duo were stopped by an off-duty police officer and the pair of them were charged with “stunting.” What that means is that there were performing or engaging in a stunt of activity on a roadway that is likely to “distract, startle, or interfere” with other road users.

Unsurpisingly, both the Camaro and the C 63 were seized and impounded. Both men, aged 43 and 48 respectively, were hit with CA$2,422 fines and had their driver’s licenses suspended for 7 days. To us, that sounds like quite a small punishment, but a week without driving will probably teach them that hitting such speeds on public roads is not a wise thing to do, regardless of whether it is done on a highway or not.

Interestingly, both the Camaro and C 63 involved were rocking license plates from Alberta, meaning they had probably driven thousands of miles across the country to Nova Scotia.
