Slammed 2021 Cadillac Escalade Required Much More Than A Set Of Lowering Springs

It is quite a common sight to see modified Cadillac Escalades roaming the streets in the States. However, this is the first heavily-modified 2021 Escalade that we’ve come across.

The latest-generation Escalade is one of the most luxurious SUVs currently on the market with a price tag that can exceed $100,000 for a flagship model. Evidently, the Escalade’s value didn’t dissuade the owner of this example from equipping it with a host of modifications.

This example is owned by a guy named Jake McKiddie who was recently interviewed for the Ridiculous Rides series on the Barcroft Cars YouTube channel. It may simply look like a lowered Escalade but much more work has gone into it than fitting a set of lowering springs.

Images from the build show that the chassis was completely removed from the SUV and totally rebuilt. It has also been equipped with 30×9 front and 30×11-inch rear wheels and an air suspension system that means it can be dropped so low that both the front and rear bumpers actually hit the ground. A set of enlarged Wilwood brakes have also been installed to better complement the massive 30-inch wheels.

Significant changes had to be made to the SUV’s interior to make this all work. In fact, a large chunk of the trunk is now taken up by the pronounced wheel wells, dramatically reducing cargo space. However, from the second row forwards, the interior of this Escalade is relatively stock.

Was The Blackwing Engine In The CT6-V Better Than The One In the CT5-V Blackwing?

It is old news by now to point out that Cadillac’s big decision to spend all kinds of money developing its own twin-turbo engine that was fitted to the CT6-V only to abandon it after producing just 1,400 examples is very odd. But how does the Blackwing engine compare to the LT4 going into the latest CT-5V Blackwing?

Well, in terms of power, not well. That the smaller CT5 makes considerably more power than the CT6 (please just assume that these are all Blackwings, I’m so very tired of spelling out these names in their entirety) is proof that the LT4 is better in at least one respect.

Although it’s not uncomplicated, the C7 Z06’s 6.2-liter supercharged pushrod engine makes nearly 120 hp more than the 4.2-liter Blackwing engine. That said, the smaller, DOHC engine makes nearly as much torque. It’s also reasonable to assume that Cadillac could have gotten more power out of its specially designed engine.

But still, there’s a beautiful simplicity to the 6.2 and the ultimate decider, if previous reports are anything to go off, appears to have been the compact size of the pushrod V8. Still, it’s worth remembering that this doesn’t make the original Blackwing engine a failure.

Despite being homed in an AWD car that weighs about 2,000 lbs more than the C7 Z06, the CT6 Blackwing was more frugal (at least the last time we had EPA fuel efficiency numbers for the engine). You would have thought that something like this would be important for a company that just said it intended to make every engine more efficient.

In the end, all the ingenious engineering in GM’s kingdom couldn’t keep the CT6-V’s Blackwing from the dumpster. While it’s hard to argue with the power of the CT5-V Blackwing, it is sad to see Caddy drop this engine so fast.

Mitsubishi Outlander And Eclipse Cross Are The Slowest-Selling New Vehicles In The U.S.

The two slowest-selling new vehicles in the United States are both Mitsubishis, a new study has found.

During a recent analysis of 4.4 million new and used vehicles sold throughout the United States in the period from March through June 2020, it was discovered that the Mitsubishi Outlander and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross are the slowest-selling new vehicles in the country. On average, it takes 197.7 days for an Outlander and 187.7 days for an Eclipse Cross to sell.

It is hardly a surprise that the Mitsubishi Outlander is so difficult to shift as it has been in production in third-generation guise, with minimal changes, since 2014 and there are many newer and more modern alternatives on the market.

Speaking about it, iSeeCars chief executive Phong Ly said: “The Mitsubishi Outlander compact SUV saw a 76 percent decrease in sales in the second quarter of 2020 compared to 2019, which shows that there isn’t high demand for the vehicle, despite its affordability and unique features like a third-row seat.”

It is somewhat of a surprise to see the Eclipse Cross so high up on the list, though, as it is still relatively new. However, like other Mitsubishi models, it is extremely basic and clearly failing to cash-in on demand for SUVs and crossovers in the United States.

The third slowest-selling new vehicle is the Buick Encore with an average sale time of 170 days. It was followed by the Nissan Frontier (158.3 days), Chevrolet Impala (153.1 days), Nissan Altima (151.9 days), Nissan Armada (151.2 days), Cadillac Escalade ESV (151.1 days), Range Rover Velar (150.4 days), and the Infiniti QX60 (149.9 days.)

It sure is not good for car manufacturers to have their new vehicles sitting around for so long. On the flip side, shoppers may find some good savings with such vehicles as dealerships should be eager to get them off their lots.

The Cadillac CT6 Lives On In China And Has Been Updated With Super Cruise

The last Cadillac CT6 for the U.S. market rolled out of the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant earlier this year, but it’s still being built and sold in China.

In fact, it’s been updated as the company has introduced two new versions featuring the automaker’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system.

The base Super Cruise variant starts at ¥469,700 ($66,934 / £52,306 / €57,427) and features a panoramic glass roof, LED lighting units and 18-inch alloy wheels. Other highlights include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.2-inch infotainment system and a 10-speaker Bose audio system. There are also heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery and a dual zone automatic climate control system.

The range-topping model costs ¥489,700 ($69,784 / £54,533 / €59,872) and is distinguished by a sportier exterior with larger 19-inch alloy wheels. This model also has adaptive headlights and an adaptive suspension.

Both versions are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 233 hp (174 kW / 237 PS) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque. It is connected to 10-speed automatic transmission which sends power to the rear wheels.

Of course, the big news is Super Cruise which uses LiDAR map data and GPS information to precisely pinpoint the car’s location. On top of that, the vehicle with an assortment of cameras and radar sensors.

All this information is combined to create a “virtual path for the vehicle to follow.” Thus, the CT6 will stay centered in its lane and automatically adjust to the flow of traffic.

Cadillac says Super Cruise can be used on nearly 300,000 km (186,411 miles) of expressways and highways across China. That’s pretty impressive, and the company noted they partnered with China’s AutoNavi to ensure their maps are accurate and precise.

On the safety front, the CT6 has been equipped with a driver attention system which uses infrared sensors and a small camera to monitor the driver and make sure they’re paying attention to the road ahead. If the driver stops paying attention for too long, the system will remind them. If they fail to respond, additional warnings will be provided using seat vibrations, audio cues and the light bar on the steering wheel.

If this still doesn’t get their attention, the car will slowly come to a stop and turn on its emergency lights. The vehicle will also call OnStar to make sure the driver is okay.
