2022 Toyota Supra Gets A $300 Bump In Price And A New $63k Carbon Fiber Edition

Toyota has announced pricing for the 2022 Supra range and the cost of buying the car has risen, as has the cost of shipping the car to you.

For 2022, the entry-level 2.0-liter Supra rings in at $43,290, $300 more from its base price in 2021, which was $42,990. That’s not the extent of it, though. For 2022, Toyota has also upped its “Delivery Processing & Handling fee” from $995 to $1,025. So customers who waited until this year to buy a cheap Supra will actually be paying $330 more than they would have last year.

Prices for the 3.0-liter Supra have risen even more. Starting at $51,640 ($52,665 w/ destination) in 2022, that’s $650 more than customers were paying in 2021, which was already $1,000 more than they were paying in 2020.

The GR Supra 3.0 Premium also gets a bit of a price bump for 2022, with an MSRP of $54,790 ($55,815 w/ destination), or $300 more than it cost last year. It gets a red leather-trimmed interior option and models equipped with the Premium Audio package get full-screen Apple Car Play.

Finally, the A91-Carbon Fiber Edition is new to the lineup and prices start at a whopping $63,280 ($64,305 w/ destination). The model is limited to just 600 examples, though, and is the most exclusive Mark V Supra to date. It features handmade carbon fiber accents, including a duckbill spoiler, a front splitter, and rockers. It also gets unique 19-inch wheels and can be finished in matte-gray Phantom, Absolute Zero White, or Nitro Yellow.

Like the other 3.0-liter Supras, it makes 382 hp (387 PS/285 kW) and can get to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.9 seconds. The 2.0-liter model, meanwhile, develops 255 hp (259 PS/190 kW) and can reach highway speeds in just five seconds. Both make more power than they did in 2020 thanks to upgrades introduced last year.

As a nice added touch, every 2022 GR Supra comes with a complimentary one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA), which gives them access to perks like discounted admission to NASA events and a free high-performance driving event.

2022 Toyota Avalon Drops AWD And TRD, Starts From $36,375 For Its Final Year

The fifth-generation Avalon might have been introduced in 2018, but Toyota has confirmed that 2022 will mark the end of its production. Today, the automaker announced pricing for the 2022 MY alongside a few changes in the lineup.

The 2022 Toyota Avalon starts from $36,375 (excluding the $1,025 fee), making it $250 more expensive than last year’s model.

The full-size sedan is not available in AWD variants anymore, while the sporty TRD trim was also dropped from the range. The good news for prospective buyers is the addition of new safety features as standard, including the upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ package (dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, etc), and the addition of a rear-seat reminder system.

The hybrid combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors producing a combined 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and comes with a fuel economy rating of 44 mpg combined.

The 2022 lineup includes six trim levels, including the XSE Nightshade Edition that is visually differentiated from the glossy black accents, the 19-inch wheels, and the rear diffuser. Inside, variants are differentiated with the base XLE featuring SofTex upholstery and “engineered wood” trim, the Limited coming with perforated leather and genuine wood sourced from Yamaha, and the Touring with perforated SofTex / Ultrasuede and aluminum trim.

Patent Filings Reveal Upcoming Toyota GR 86 Front Bumper

Just a few months ago, Subaru unveiled their all-new BRZ, and now we get to take a glimpse at what its upcoming Toyota twin might look like ahead of its debut in the coming months thanks to some patent images filed by the company.

The patent filings were with IP Australia and they reveal the design of the front bumper’s design in full, from every angle. In typical Toyota fashion, it features a wide central grille with air intakes on either side, which serve as ducts to guide air past the front wheels.

The design is not too dissimilar to that of Toyota’s GR Yaris and the resemblance could mean that the next-gen Toyobaru will wear the GR badge as well. In fact, if we look closely at the top right corner of the grille, there appears to be a slot for such a badge to go into.

Interestingly enough, while this bumper only serves as a limited representation of its styling, this GR 86 seems to be more in line with other Toyotas than the BRZ is with other Subarus.

That being said, if the relationship between the previous Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ twins is indicative of anything, it’s that much of the new-generation sports cars’ styling and mechanicals will be practically identical, with the only major changes likely to be the front and rear bumpers, some details and trim in the interior and perhaps the suspension setup.

The all-new Toyota 86’s unveiling is expected to take place within the next few months, ahead of a rumored arrival late in the second half of this year alongside its Subaru twin.

Britain Gains Entry-Level Toyota GR Supra 2.0 From £45,995

Britain’s new entry-level 2021 Toyota GR Supra is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and costs £7,000 less ($9,500) than the 3.0-liter variant. The new Supra 2.0 is available to order now from £45,995 ($62,500), with customer deliveries set to commence later this month.

While the £45,995 price tag is for the 2.0 Pro variant, there’s also a Fuji Speedway Edition model to consider, priced from £47,395 ($64,400).

Just like with the straight-six, this unit is also borrowed from BMW, delivering a total output of 254 HP (258 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, allowing you to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.2 seconds, before maxing out at 155 mph (250 km/h). Toyota also says that you can expect a return of 38.7 mpg (32.2 U.S. mpg) combined.

With the engine more compact and lighter by 100 kg (220 lbs) compared to the 3.0-liter unit, Toyota managed to mount it further towards the center of the car for a 50/50 weight distribution, which in turn “improves the car’s inertia characteristics and chassis balance for even sharper handling.”

“To achieve agile steering and stable cornering, we worked very hard to reduce the new car’s weight, while aiming for a 50:50 weight balance,” said GR Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada. “This presented us with huge challenges, but we did not want to compromise on our targets.”

Specs at launch for the Pro variant include the 18-inch wheels, 8.8-inch multimedia display, four-speaker 100W audio system and Alcantara upholstery for the heated seats. Toyota Supra Safety+ is also available, offering a Pre-Collision Safety system with Braking function, Pedestrian and Cyclist detection with Braking Function, Lane Departure Alert with Active Steering, Road Sign Assist and Automatic High Beam.

As for the Fuji Speedway limited edition model, there are only 45 examples coming to the UK (available at launch).

Is The Toyota 86 Worth Buying With The New Supra 2.0 Now On Sale?

The Toyota 86 may be getting a little long in the tooth, but it is still a great driver’s car. However, with a 2.0-liter variant of the Supra now on sale in the United States, does the 86 remain a compelling buy?

To find out, EverydayDriver put a 2021 Supra 2.0 against a 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition. Ultimately, the two reviewers are split on their opinions of which car is the better value proposition, but the review is well worth a watch.

Watch Also: 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Is Just As Good As The Road It’s Named After

On the spec sheet, the 86 Hakone features a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder and delivers a total of 205 hp and 156 lb-ft (211 Nm) of torque. It is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic and, of course, is rear-wheel drive.

By comparison, the Supra 2.0 has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 255 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque that is exclusively coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. It can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.2 seconds, which isn’t too shabby considering this is the entry-level model.

So, not only is the Supra 2.0 much more powerful than the 86 but it is much more refined and has a far more luxurious interior. However, it costs roughly $16,000 more. That’s a lot of money, so can it justify such a premium over its smaller sibling?

The 2020 Toyota Supra Passes The Moose Test – But It Wasn’t A Walk In The Park

The 2020 Toyota Supra has been one of the most talked-about cars of the past 18 months and is a joy to drive. However, can it pass the moose test?

Ordinarily, we’re accustomed to seeing sedans, estates, SUVs, and pickup trucks being subjected to the moose test – and a surprising number of them fail. Logic dictates that a sports car like the new Supra would pass the test without breaking a sweat – which it did, but not with as much ease as you may expect.

Read Also: The Toyota Supra May Soon Get A Manual Transmission

The test was performed by km77 in Spain and shows that the Supra successfully passed the moose test at a top speed of 48 mph (77 km/h). In the clip, we can see how Toyota’s safety systems work together to push the car into understeer while minimizing the loss of traction at the rear wheels, ensuring the driver is able to remain in control. However, the publication notes that it took a bit of practice to perfect the moose test in the Supra due to its variable-ratio power steering.

As the speeds were increased to 49 mph (79 km/h) and 49.7 mph (80 km/h), the Supra failed both times as it skidded into the cones.

The trials concluded with a slalom test that the Supra was able to easily complete successfully. It offered good handling between the cones, but the numb steering was a bit of a letdown.

New 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross Blurs The Lines Between Hatches And SUVs

If you needed any more proof that demand for SUVs and crossovers shows no signs of abating, this is it. Say hello to the Toyota Corolla Cross, a crossover variant of the Japanese marque’s most famous hatchback and arriving just a few months after the Toyota Yaris Cross.

The Toyota Corolla Cross has so far only been unveiled in Thailand and uses the Toyota New Global Architecture C (TGNA-C). It will be sold in both hybrid and petrol forms and is 4,460 mm (175.5 inches) long, 1,825 mm (71.9 inches) wide, and 1,620 mm (63.8) inches tall, complete with a 2,640 mm (103.9 inches) wheelbase.

Entry-level models sold in Thailand come outfitted with a 1.8-liter petrol engine producing 140 hp and 129 lb-ft (175 Nm) of torque. This engine drives the front wheels through a CVT. Toyota being Toyota, a hybrid is also on offer, and combines a 1.8-liter that produces 98 hp and 105 lb-ft (142 Nm) with an electric motor delivering an extra 72 hp and 120 lb-ft (163 Nm) of torque. Paired with this hybrid setup is an electric CVT.

Elsewhere, the Corolla Cross comes with MacPherson strut front suspension, torsion-beam rear suspension, disc brakes at all four corners, and is available with 17- and 18-inch wheels wrapped in 215/60 and 225/50 rubber respectively.

From a visual standpoint, the crossover looks nothing like the Corolla hatchback and instead looks more like a baby RAV4. Found up front is a pronounced black grille as well as sharp headlights and LED daytime running lights. The crossover also includes black bumpers, side skirts, and wheel arches while sporting a pair of black roof rails.

Whereas the exterior look is unique, the interior is very familiar with the Corolla hatchback. There is a large touchscreen jutting out of the dashboard, a digital gauge cluster, and the same air vents as the hatch.

Sales of the new Corolla Cross will kick off this month in Thailand. It will land in other markets in the not too distant future as well, though Toyota hasn’t provided any specific details yet.

Toyota Will Build Spare Parts Again For The Iconic 2000GT Sports Car

Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) has announced that it will reproduce spare parts for the brand’s most coveted classic car, the 2000GT.

TGR will build the parts as GR Heritage Parts Project and will sell them both in Japan and overseas. As part of the project, Toyota Gazoo Racing will reproduce spare parts that were no longer available, and sell them as genuine parts to customers who want to continue driving their classic cars.

The announcement follows a similar initiative from May 2019 regarding the reproduction of A70 Supra and A80 Supra parts. TGR will start taking orders for 2000GT parts on August 1, 2020, with the reproduced parts available to purchase from Toyota dealers in the same way as normal genuine parts. However, sales will be restricted to owners in order to prevent reselling; furthermore, the number of parts sold will be limited per car.

Toyota 2000GT final gear kit

As for the A70 and A80 Supra parts, the first round of reproduced items will be available to order through Toyota dealers in Japan and overseas from July 1. Those include the A70 sender gauge, A70 door handle, and A80 door handle.

The Toyota 2000GT is a sports car launched in 1967 as part of a collaboration with Yamaha. Production ended in 1970 after a run of only 337 units. At the time, the 2000GT adopted the latest Japanese technology, including a 2.0-liter DOHC straight six engine, four-wheel double-wishbone suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, radial tires, magnesium alloy wheels, and retractable headlamps.

The 2000GT was able to reach a maximum speed of 220 km/h (136 mph), on a par with European sports cars of the day. It became an iconic sports car for Toyota and was used in scenes shot in Japan for the James Bond film ‘You Only Live Twice‘.

2021 Toyota RAV4 PHV Debuts As Japan’s RAV4 Prime

Already on sale in North America as the Toyota RAV4 Prime, the plug-in hybrid RAV4 debuts today in the automaker’s home country.

Marketed as the RAV4 PHV in Japan, it features the same powertrain as the model sold overseas. The new Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II) achieves a maximum system output of 225 kW (306 HP / 302 HP) by combining a 177 PS (175 HP) 2.5-liter four-cylinder Dynamic Force gasoline engine with a 134 kW (182 PS / 180 HP) front electric motor, a 40 kW (54 PS / 53 HP) rear electric motor, and a 18.1 kWh battery.

This enables the RAV4 PHV to achieve an all-electric driving range of 95 km (59 miles) and an average fuel economy rating of 22 km/L (4.5 l/100 km / 51.7 mpg US), as per Japan’s WLTC test cycle.

See Also: 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV Is Both The Most Powerful And Fuel-Efficient RAV4 Ever

The powerful hybrid system also enables a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration of 6.0 seconds. The E-Four electric 4WD system plays an important role in that, fully distributing the power produced by the plug-in hybrid system between all four wheels.

In Japan, the new RAV4 PHV comes with a maximum of 1,500 W (AC 100 V) external power supply function as standard. This makes it possible to fit a vehicle power connector which can be plugged into the regular charging inlet for use as an external power socket. The supplied power cable (both AC 100 and 200 V) can be connected to an electrical socket for recharging, which takes approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes via AC 200 V/16 A or 27 hours via 100 V/6 A.

Compared to the regular RAV4 sold in Japan, the PHV model can be recognized thanks to a model-specific front grille and bumper, as well as special LED DRLs and newly-designed 19-inch RAV4 aluminum wheels. Customers can choose between six colors, including the RAV4 PHV-exclusive Emotional Red II. In addition, a total of five two-tone combinations are available.

Inside, the RAV4 PHV features an all-black treatment with red stitching on the seats, steering wheel, shift lever, instrument panel, door panels, and center console. Synthetic leather sports seats are standard for all models, as are a 9-inch Display Audio infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

From a safety standpoint, the plug-in hybrid SUV comes with the Toyota Safety Sense suite as standard. Highlights include a pre-collision safety system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Parking Support Brakes, 360-degree camera system, and Head Up Display.

Toyota prices the RAV4 PHV from 4,690,000 yen ($42,820) in Japan.
