Hyundai Expects Flying Urban Taxis To Take Off Before 2030

Hyundai is very optimistic about the future of urban air mobility and has suggested the industry will really take off towards the end of the decade.

There are already a couple of flying cars already on the market but no major automaker has introduced one so far. Among the car manufacturers venturing into the market is Hyundai, although it is developing a vertical take-off and landing flying vehicle, rather than a flying car that can also be driven on the street.

The South Korean automaker first introduced its S-A1 flying vehicle concept co-developed with Uber back in early 2020. Work on the vehicle is progressing well and Hyundai plans to launch its first commercial flight in 2028.

“There’s some time before we can really get this off the ground,” the chief executive of Hyundai’s European operating, Michael Cole, told The Guardian. “We think that by the latter part of this decade certainly, urban air mobility will offer great opportunity to free up congestion in cities, to help with emissions, whether that’s intra-city mobility in the air or whether it’s even between cities.”

Hyundai is so serious about the future of flying mobility that in November, it formed a new company dubbed Supernal that serves as an evolution of its Urban Air Mobility Division and will be responsible for bringing the S-A1 concept to the market. The VTOL aircraft has been designed for cruising speeds of up to 180 mph (290 km/h) with a cruising altitude of 1,000-2,000 feet (300-600 meters) and will be powered exclusively by electricity.

Hyundai’s Adorable New Casper Goes On Sale In Korea With A Sub-$12k Price And Plenty Of Kit

Hyundai revealed the first official pictures and information of the Casper two weeks ago and now the company is showing us the interior of the tiny SUV while announcing pricing for the Korean market through the car’s dedicated website.

Despite measuring only 3,595 mm (141.5 inches) long, 1,595 mm (62.8 inches) wide, and 1,575 mm (62 inches) tall, the new Casper appears to have a quite roomy four-seater cabin with plenty of practical features and modern technology.

Both of the front seats can fold flat (a word’s first for the driver’s seat, according to Hyundai) which in combination with the split-folding rear seats can transform the cabin into a sleeping area. Additionally, the rear seats can slide by 160 mm (6.3 inches) and recline by up to 39 degrees, prioritizing either rear legroom or boot space. The latter has a capacity of 301 liters (10.6 cubic feet) with the rear seats in the most forward position.

Hyundai designers added some colorful touches on Casper’s cabin and make it a more pleasant place to sit, while the plastic materials appear to be more in line with the budget character of the model, at least in the photos.

However, the tech features are impressive for the segment, at least in the flagship trim level, which gets an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation, blue link, voice recognition, and Hyundai CarPlay, while there is also a 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 6-speaker audio system (2-speakers on the base spec model).

Next to the transmission shifter, you’ll also find a driving mode switch that includes a 2WD rough road setting (snow/sand/mud) for better traction.

In terms of safety, the Casper is fitted with 7 airbags as standard, including an airbag between the driver and the front passenger. Despite being just a small crossover, it also gets plenty of active safety systems including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist and Lane Keeping Assist as standard. The top trim level adds a navigation-based Smart Cruise Control and Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist.

The most affordable “SUV” from Hyundai

Since the 14th of September, Hyundai started accepting early bid reservations for the Casper, until its official debut which is scheduled for the 29th of September. The model range consists of three grades – Smart, Modern, and Inspiration – with pricing positioning the Casper as Hyundai’s most affordable crossover model (significantly cheaper than the BayonCretaVenue, and Kona B-SUVs).

The entry-level Smart starts from 13,850,000 won ($11,860), the mid-spec Modern starts from 15,900,000 won ($13,612) while the flagship Inspiration starts from 18,700,000 won ($16,010). The latter has plenty of kit for the price, including the 8-inch infotainment, the complete range of Hyundai SmartSense ADAS systems, and 17-inch wheels. Optional features include the sunroof which costs 400,000 won ($342), and the pictured Active bodystyle adding an extra 900,000 – 950,000 won ($771 – $814) to the price for a more purposeful look.

The engine range in the Korean market includes a pair of three-cylinder petrol motors – a naturally aspirated 1.0 MPI producing 75 hp (56 kW / 76 PS) and a turbocharged 1.0 T-GDI producing 99 hp (74 kW / 100 PS). Both of them are mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox sending power to the front axle.

Hyundai Introduces New Hydrogen-Powered Concepts, Including A 671 HP Sports Car

The auto industry is undergoing a major transition as the era of the internal combustion engine is coming to a close.

While a number of companies are going electric, that isn’t the only option as fuel cells are waiting for their moment in the spotlight. Hyundai is shining some on them today with a Hydrogen Wave event, which aims to popularize the eco-friendly technology and usher in a new ‘wave’ of hydrogen-powered products.

There’s a lot to cover, but the Hyundai Motor Group believes they will be able to offer fuel cell vehicles at a price point that is comparable to battery electric vehicles by 2030. This would be a big change as the Hyundai Nexo starts at $58,935 while the Toyota Mirai begins at $49,500.

In order to achieve this, the company is planning to introduce their next-generation fuel cell system in 2023. It promises to be 50% more affordable than the current system, while also offering improved durability and output.

The third-generation fuel cell is currently in development, but the company showed off two different versions of it. The 100 kW stack is 30% smaller than the current one and this enables it to be used in a greater range of vehicles and applications. The company also showcased a 200 kW version designed for commercial vehicles and it’s roughly the same size as the current Nexo system, despite having twice the output.

The fuel cells can also be used in a variety of non-automotive applications and Hyundai mentioned using them as an emergency power supply for large ships or IT companies. As part of this effort, 100 kW units can be linked together in a Lego-like fashion to provide combined outputs ranging from 500 kW to 1 MW.

The company also revealed a “Full-Flat System,” which has a reduced stack height of 9.8 inches (25 cm). This allows fuel cells to be used in vehicles – ranging from buses, trams and MPVs – with minimal clearance.

Much of the news focused on commercial vehicles and Hyundai expects to become the first global automaker to apply fuel cells to all their commercial vehicles by 2028. The company isn’t a stranger to this as the XCIENT Fuel Cell was the world’s first mass produced fuel cell heavy-duty truck and is already in use.

There are a number of other vehicles on the horizon including a tractor based on the XCIENT Fuel Cell, which will arrive in 2024. Hyundai also announced plans for a 5- to 7-meter (16.4 – 23 feet) purpose built fuel cell vehicle, which will compete in the global light commercial vehicle segment.

While hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles will help to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, the real highlight of the event was the introduction of a handful of concepts. The most eye-catching was the Vision FK, which is a high-performance model that is apparently based on the Kia Stinger.

Hyundai didn’t go into many specifics, but said the prototype has a “fuel cell energy converter” and a rear-wheel drive plug-in hybrid powertrain. This setup gives the car an output in excess of 671 hp (500 kW / 680 PS) and allows for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of less than four seconds. The model is also slated to have a range of over 373 miles (600 km).

During a press conference last night, Hyundai’s research and development boss revealed the model was developed with the assistance of Rimac and described it as “technical overkill.”  Albert Biermann added the car’s development was an exciting challenge and hinted at the possibility of taking it racing.

On the trucking side of things, there’s the Trailer Drone concept. It’s essentially a container, which rides on two e-Bogies.  The latter are the star of the show as they’re essentially fully autonomous vehicles with the top half cut off.

Each e-Bogie has a fuel cell powertrain as well as wheels with independent steering. The latter allows for unprecedented maneuverability and even a Hummer-like crab walk function.  Furthermore, the company envisions a Cluster Mode, which would enable “multiple Trailer Drones to travel together in an almost train-like configuration.”

The e-Bogies can be used for other applications and that’s apparent with the Rescue Drone concept. It’s effectively an e-Bogie, which has been outfitted with a number of drones. The concept is envisioned to be used in emergency situations, such as fighting fires.

Hyundai also showed off a portable hydrogen refueling station as well as a Rescue Hydrogen Generator Vehicle. The latter can be used to supply power to stranded EVs in remote, off-road areas.

According to Chairman Euisun Chung, “Hyundai Motor Group’s vision is to apply hydrogen energy in all areas of life and industry such as our homes, work places and factories. The goal is to make hydrogen readily used for everyone, everything and everywhere.” He went on to say the company wants to offer “practical solutions for the sustainable development of humanity” and help foster a hydrogen society by 2040.

While some of the ideas seem a little far fetched, Hyundai wants to educate people about hydrogen and get them excited about fuel cell vehicles.  The company is also optimistic about the future of the technology as a number of governments have announced plans to support efforts to promote fuel cell vehicles.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 Spied Inside

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is getting closer and closer to its debut set for early 2021 after they release their trailer.

Today we found more exterior pictures of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 but interestingly we also found an interior pictures were we want to look more in depth.

We know this Ioniq 5 will premier their new Electric Global Modular Platform or E-GMP but also some Autonomous technology.

Lets review the interior picture, the first thing that caught our attention was the large screen that extends from the driver to the infotainment system, something similar to what have seen on the new Hyundai Elantra. Right at the top on the infotaiment we also find another screen but this seems to be added for testing.

Now lets analyze all the screens information, on the driver side we find something similar to their Smart Cruise Control and judging from the picture of the road on the added screen on the windshield we feel Hyundai could be testing their Autonomous Technology.

The infotaiment screen is on navigation and the screen is split in 2, the one of the left is the map and the right on turn by turn screen but also right on top of the screen we find more additional information like the speed, navigation arrow and more, similar to a Heads-up Display. This could be a third small but long screen to show a minimum information instead of using both big screen to save some energy.

What we know so far?

The teaser video below provides the first details of the Ioniq 5, which is set for an early 2021 reveal. The IONIQ 5 will premiere recently announced Electric Global Modular Platform or E-GMP.

Hyundai take advantage of the teaser to share a few hints of the new electric vehicle. They used a few phrases to preview what the Ioniq 5 will be capable of, like “Extra Power for Life” that calls attention to IONIQ 5’s vehicle-to-load (V2L) bi-directional charging capability, “Extra Time for You” highlights its fast-charging capability or “Extraordinary Experiences,” that hints at the BEV’s soon-to-be-announced array of features.

The video’s release follows Hyundai’s announcement, made in August 2020, that it will launch a dedicated BEV lineup brand IONIQ in its bid to become one of the world’s top EV manufacturers. Under IONIQ, Hyundai will launch a range of EVs, including IONIQ 5, a midsize CUV in early 2021; IONIQ 6, a sedan; followed by IONIQ 7, a large SUV.

2021 Hyundai i20 N Line Has Sporty Looks And A 1.0-Liter With 118 HP

The 2021 Hyundai i20 N Line is the latest model in the automaker’s range to receive some performance-inspired parts and will arrive in certain markets next year.

The exterior of the hatchback is based on Hyundai’s ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ design identity and incorporates some modifications from lesser i20 models. For example, it receives a new front bumper with a grey character line that Hyundai says creates “an even more sporty feeling.” A large black cascading grille equipped with an L Line badge is also featured. The pattern of the grille itself draws inspiration from the style of a chequered flag.

Hyundai’s designers have continued the tweaks at the rear with a new bumper, twin chrome tailpipes, and a triangle-shaped fog light incorporated into the diffuser. A set of 17-inch alloy wheels with a two-tone finish complete the look.

Buyers will be offered Phantom Black, Aurora Grey, Polar White and Brass paint options. Those that opt for the Polar White can also option a two-tone Phantom Black roof.

Alterations continue in the cabin and include N-branded sports seats with the N logo and exclusive red stitching. There is also a dedicated N steering wheel, leather gear shift knob with red inserts, and metal pedals. Much like other i20 models, the i20 N Line includes the latest version of Hyundai’s Bluelink technology that includes a host of Connected Car services like Hyundai Live Services and various remote features through the Bluelink smartphone app.

Hyundai’s i20-Based Crossover For Europe Spotted For The First Time

Hyundai was caught testing what looks like their upcoming i20-based small crossover model for the first time.

The new model will become Hyundai’s smallest crossover in the range, at least in Europe, based on the new i20 sub-compact hatchback. Unlike the previous-gen i20 Active, which was just a lifted version of the regular hatch with added plastic fenders, Hyundai’s new crossover model is expected to feature its own unique bodywork.

Read Also: 2021 Hyundai i20 N Shows More Of Its Muscles During Nürburgring Training Session

From the spy shots, we can notice some resemblance with the regular i20, particularly at the front, but the rear looks completely different, featuring a longer roof and a more wagon-esque aesthetic. The taillights are also new units that reach over to the D-pillar instead of the hatchback’s horizontal ones, with a separate set of lights left visible lower on the bumper.

The interior was also covered by a semi-transparent cover but since we have already seen the cabin of the new i20, it’s pretty easy to see that Hyundai uses the same dashboard design here as well. The 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is paired with an equally sized touchscreen display for the infotainment system, which will feature both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The new i20-based crossover will slot under the Kona in Hyundai’s European model range, offered there instead of the Venue that’s on sale in North America and other regions.

It will be available only with front-wheel-drive and will share most -if not all- the powertrains that are available with the i20. That includes the 1.0-liter T-GDI petrol engine, which is offered with two power outputs -100 PS and 120 PS- and paired with a mild-hybrid 48-volt system. Transmission options will include both a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Given that most of the bodywork under the heavy camouflage looks production-ready, we expect Hyundai to reveal its newest crossover model sometime towards the end of the year.

Hyundai Details The Santa Fe’s New Hybrid And Plug-In Hybrid Powertrains

Hyundai introduced the new Santa Fe earlier this month, and now the company has released details about its engine lineup.

In Europe, there will be a hybrid variant that features a turbocharged 1.6-liter petrol engine, a 59 hp (44 kW / 60 PS) electric motor and a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion battery. This will give the crossover a combined output of 227 hp (169 kW / 230 PS) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque.

A plug-in hybrid variant will arrive next year with the same 1.6-liter turbo engine. However, it will have a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and a more powerful electric motor that develops 90 hp (67 kW / 91 PS). The model will be available exclusively with all-wheel drive, and have a combined output of 261 hp (195 kW / 265 PS) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque.

Also Read: Hyundai Gives 2021 Santa Fe A Thorough Refresh With Daring Face And New Platform

On the diesel side, there will be a 2.2-liter Smartstream engine which features an aluminum block that enables it to weigh 43 lbs (19.5 kg) less than its predecessor. The engine has also a new camshaft and an upgraded fuel injection system.

Thanks to these changes, the four-cylinder will produce 199 hp (149 kW / 202 PS) and 324 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque. It will be connected to a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission which provides improved acceleration and better fuel efficiency.

Besides revealing powertrain details, Hyundai provided more information about the Santa Fe’s platform. While the model looks like a simple facelift, Hyundai says it rides on an all-new platform and this allows for “significant improvements in performance, handling, fuel efficiency and safety.”

In particular, Hyundai says the fixed points for the steering arms have been positioned closer to the middle of the front wheels for more agile handling. The architecture also uses a multi-load path structure, hot stamping and a super high-tensile steel plate to better absorb impacts and minimize deformation of the passenger space in the event of a collision.

The platform also has a lower center of gravity and unspecified weight savings. That’s on top of a more comfortable driving experience thanks to “reinforced sound-absorbing systems in vibration-sensitive parts.”

The new platform allows the Santa Fe to be a tad roomier as there’s an additional 1.2 inches (3 cm) of second-row legroom and an extra 1.6 inches (4 cm) of third-row legroom. Buyers will also find a more accommodating cargo compartment.

While the Santa Fe can be equipped with a familiar all-wheel drive system, there’s a new Terrain Mode selector with sand, snow, mud, eco, sport and comfort modes. The model can also be equipped with an optional smart driving mode which recognizes your driving style and automatically selects the appropriate mode for you.

The first three modes are self-explanatory, but Hyundai says sport mode improves acceleration by distributing up to 50 percent of torque to the rear wheels. Comfort mode favors stability, while eco mode saves fuel by being front-wheel drive only.

Lastly, the Santa Fe comes with a host of driver assistance systems including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Safe Exit Assist, Blind-Spot View Monitor, Lane Following Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist.

The big news is Highway Driving Assist which is available on the Santa Fe for the first time. It uses the Lane Following Assist and Smart Cruise Control systems to keep the vehicle centered in its lane and traveling at an appropriate speed.

Another new addition is the Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist system. It uses a rearview camera and ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles when reversing. When an obstacle is detected, it will warn the driver and apply the brakes if necessary.

The crossover can also be equipped with Remote Smart Parking Assist – or “Smaht Pahk” – which enables owners to use their key to move the Santa Fe forward or backward. This can be used for entering or exiting tight parking spaces.
