Mary Barra Says GM Can Catch Tesla In EV Sales By 2025

General Motors chief executive Mary Barra says the car manufacturer can catch Tesla in U.S. sales of electric vehicles by 2025.

GM intends on launching no less than 30 electric vehicles by 2025 and while recently speaking during CNBC’s Squawk Box, Barra expressed confidence in her belief that the company will establish itself as the EV leader.

“I am very comfortable, because when people get into these vehicles, they are just wowed,” she said. “So we will be rolling them out and we’re going to just keep working until we have No. 1 market share in EVs.”

Tesla currently dominates the electric vehicle space in the United States. In fact, the automaker accounted for 79 percent of all EVs sold in the U.S. throughout 2020. However, research and forecasting company HIS Markit says Tesla’s U.S. share of EV sales will drop to 56 percent throughout 2021 and fall to approximately 20 percent in 2025.

Speaking with CNBC, LMC Automotive added that sales of EVs, including plug-in hybrids, will account for less than 4 percent of vehicle sales across the country this year. The research firm suggests that EVs will make up 34.2 percent of new U.S. vehicle sales by 2030, with 4.1 percent of those sales being for plug-in hybrids.

A key pillar in GM’s EV expansion goals is their plans to install up to 40,000 Level 2 EV chargers across the United States and Canada as part of a $750 million investment.

Tesla On Autopilot Doing 82 MPH Pulled Over For Driver Sleeping At The Wheel

There’s no denying that Tesla’s Autopilot system is an impressive technology, but it still requires the driver to be behind the wheel and alert at all times. Unfortunately, this is another case where that didn’t happen.

Kenosha County deputy David Gomez received a call early Sunday morning to look out for a Tesla Model 3 traveling down the highway with what appeared to be a sleeping driver in it. He found the vehicle, clocked it going 82 mph (131 km/h), and proceeded to pursue it.

Gomez followed the car for over two miles, all the while changing the tone and pitch of his siren. It wasn’t until he came alongside the Tesla for the second time that its driver woke up and pulled off to the side of the road.

The officer then spoke to the 38-year-old driver, who said he was on his way to his job at FedEx. He claimed he wasn’t sleeping, and cited the fact that Autopilot periodically requires drivers to place their hands on the steering wheel.

However, according to Gomez, this was not the first time this incident has been reported. Two other attempts to pull over a car with this registration had been made before, both with the driver’s head was down and they were seemingly asleep while the vehicle continued to travel on its own.

Interestingly, the driver didn’t receive any tickets for speeding, but a $187 citation for inattentive driving. However, the Model 3 was towed as Gomez felt it wasn’t safe for the 38-year-old to get behind the wheel again.

NTSB To Release Report On Deadly Tesla Crash Within A Month

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will publish its report on the deadly accident involving a Tesla Model S in Texas within a month.

Earlier this month, a Model S crashed into a tree in Texas, erupting into flames and killing both occupants. Authorities discovered that one of the occupants was in the front passenger seat while the owner was in the back seat, prompting speculation that the vehicle’s Autopilot system may have been enabled.

“A preliminary report typically comes out in a month, but we are working hard to get it out as soon as possible because we recognize there is this confusion out there,” deputy director of the NTSB Kristin Poland said in a statement issued to Reuters.

A Harris County fire marshal’s report says that 69-year-old Everette Talbot was seated in the right front passenger seat with his upper torso “in a forward-leaning position, with both arms rolled forward”. Meanwhile, 59-year-old Williams Varner was found in the left rear passenger seat with his upper torso “in a rear-leaning position, with both arms rolled back and in a pugilistic pose.”

Taking to Twitter in the immediate aftermath of the crash, Elon Musk claimed that an early analysis had determined that Autopilot was not activated. Speaking during the company’s Q1 earnings call, vice-president of vehicle engineering at Tesla, Lars Moravy, claimed that the steering wheel of the Model S was deformed, leading him to suggest there was someone in the driver’s seat at the time of the crash.

“We recognize that that’s not an ideal circumstance,” Poland said of the continued confusion about the accident. “The sooner we can get the preliminary report out the better it will be for everybody to provide as much clarity as possible,” she added, stating that the report will be based on solid facts.

Tesla Model S Performance Can’t Keep Up With Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S

Next year, the Tesla Model S ‘Plaid’ will start to reach the hands of customers but for now, it is the Porsche Taycan Turbo S that’s proven itself to be the most accelerative electric sedan currently on sale.

In what is the most comprehensive test between the flagship Model S Performance and the Taycan Turbo S to date, DragTimes headed out to the quarter-mile to put the duo through their paces. The results were close but it was the Porsche that claimed victory.

During the first run, the Porsche leaps out of the box slightly quicker than the Tesla and is able to stretch out its lead as the two EVs run down the quarter-mile. In the second race, the driver of the Tesla jumped the start and ran a 10.563 quarter-mile, still behind the Porsche that recorded a 10.393-second quarter-mile. The third and final race almost perfectly mimicked the first race as it was the Porsche that got the better launch and stretched out a commanding lead.

To ensure the two were evenly matched, both were brought to the drag strip on trucks and each had 100 per cent charge before the first race.

According to the YouTuber, the Porsche recorded a best 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of 2.35 seconds while the Model S Performance recorded a best time of 2.34 seconds. However, thanks to the two-speed transmission of the Taycan Turbo S, it proves to be too much as the speeds increased. The Porsche is also said to have performed more consistently throughout the day of filming.

Ferrari F8 Tributo Wants To Show Tesla Model S Performance ICE V8s Are Very Much Alive

Electric vehicles are hard to beat off the line, but if you own a combustion engined car with enough power and a long enough stretch of road to race on, it is possible to out-accelerate the quickest EV on sale: the Tesla Model S Performance with Cheetah Mode.

This clip comes from YouTuber DragTimes and shows three races down the quarter-mile between a Model S Performance and a Ferrari F8 Tributo. The races are competitive, but it is the Ferrari that has the advantage in all of them.

Off the line, the Tesla is too much for the Ferrari to handle, not that this is much of a surprise. In fact, the Tesla was able to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in a mere 2.31 seconds during one of the three drag races, a time that’s simply impossible for the F8 Tributo to match.

However, as the speeds start to increase, the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 of the Ferrari proves to be too much for the Tesla, and it passes the Model S roughly halfway down the drag strip in each of the three races. As you’d expect, it also sounds far better than the near-silent electric saloon during these races.

On the night of testing, the Ferrari was averaging quarter-mile times in the 10.2-second range, while the Model S was hovering around the 10.5-second mark.

The F8 Tributo is the fastest mid-engined model in Ferrari’s U.S. range but soon, the first customer deliveries of the SF90 Stradale will commence and, thanks to its hybrid powertrain putting out 986 HP, it should be noticeably faster. As for Tesla, the tri-motor Model S Plaid is also just around the corner and promises to redefine straight-line performance for a production car.

Tesla Model S On Autopilot Crashes Into Dodge Police Car, Driver Admits To Watching A Movie

The driver of a Tesla Model S has admitted to watching a movie earlier in the week when the EV was in Autopilot mode and slammed into the rear of a Dodge Charger patrol car in Nash County, North Carolina.

It is reported that the incident happened at just past midnight on August 26. A Nash County police car was parked on the side of Highway 64 as a deputy and trooper were attending a previous crash when the Tesla slammed into the rear of the cruiser.

CBS 17 reports that the force of the impact pushed the trooper and deputy to the ground, but they avoided injury. The crash caused significant damage to both the Tesla and the Dodge.

Speaking with authorities after the incident, the driver of the Tesla, identified as Devainder Goli, revealed that he had been watching a movie on his phone while the car was operating in Autopilot mode.

“It was a simple lane closure and then suddenly death was at our footsteps,” Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said. “It shows automation is never going to take the place of the motoring public paying attention, not texting, not being on the phone, but focusing on what you were doing, that is, driving.”

Goli has been charged with a move over violation and ‘location of television in vehicle.’

Footage taken from the scene shows that the front of the Tesla was destroyed in the crash, while the rear-end of the Dodge Charger was wrecked and one of the wheels was ripped off.
