Ford Kicks Off Bronco Pre-Production, Shows Exclusive Lightning Blue Color For First Edition

The 2021 Ford Bronco is inching closer to dealerships as pre-production models have rolled off the assembly line at the Michigan Assembly Plant, which is the historic home of the Bronco.

Posted by Bronco Nation, the pictures show a two- and four-door Bronco going from a shell to a finished vehicle.

The site says the four-door variant is a Bronco Badlands with an Oxford White exterior and a removable hardtop. It’s equipped with a ten-speed automatic transmission and a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that produces 270 hp (201 kW / 274 PS) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque.

The two-door model is the entry-level Bronco and it looks pretty underwhelming. Putting that aside, it has an Iconic Silver exterior and a 2.3-liter engine paired to a seven-speed manual.

These models won’t be headed to eager customers as they’re pre-production units which will now be subjected to a barrage of testing. That’s important as Ford has received more than 165,000 reservations for the Bronco and Bronco Sport, and the company can’t afford to botch the launch like they did with the Explorer.

Of course, it will be months before the Bronco arrives at dealerships as the first deliveries aren’t scheduled until the spring of 2021. Many of them will be First Editions and Ford recently confirmed they will be offered with an exclusive Lightning Blue exterior. It looks pretty sharp and will hopefully appease fans who will shell out over $60,000 for the model which is limited to 7,000 units.

Here’s More Intense Off-Roading With The 2021 Ford Bronco

A pair of new videos showing the 2021 Ford Bronco being tested in Moab, Utah along the extremely difficult Hell’s Revenge Trail have hit our desks.

In these videos, a handful of camouflaged and non-camouflaged Bronco prototypes are driven up and down large rock faces along the 6.5-mile long trail. At one stage in the second video, a Bronco is filmed at ‘Mickey’s Hot Tub,’ a difficult obstacle along the trail where vehicles drive into a large hole and then have to drive out the other side via a near-vertical face of rock. With the exception of some wheel slip, the Bronco deals with the obstacle very well indeed.

Both 2- and 4-door Bronco prototypes are featured in the video with various different wheel and tire packages. All of them seem superbly capable in tough off-road conditions, something that will be welcomed by enthusiasts and prospective owners alike.

Aiding the Bronco’s off-road abilities is the fact that it offers best-in-class ground clearance of 11.6 inches (294 mm) and best-in-class water fording at 33.5 inches (851 mm). It also has a maximum breakover angle of 29 degrees with a departure angle of 32 degrees. The short front and rear overhangs prove to be particularly useful in these videos.

When order books for the 2021 Ford Bronco open, it will be available with two EcoBoost engines; a base 2.3-liter four-cylinder producing 270 hp and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque and a 2.7-liter V6 with 310 hp and 400 lb-ft (542 Nm). A hybrid model is also thought to be in the works.

Ford Delays New Bronco Unveiling Again, This Time To Skip O.J. Simpson’s Birthday

The 2021 Ford Bronco can’t seem to catch a break as its highly anticipated unveiling was originally postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last weekend, the company announced a new date of July 9th. That seemed perfectly fine, but it coincided O.J. Simpson’s birthday.

The former football running back, nicknamed “The Juice”, of course, is famous for a Ford Bronco chase following the deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman. An estimated 95 million people watched the chase live and it was one of the iconic moments of the 1990’s.

Ford originally downplayed the connection and said the unveiling on Simpson’s birthday was simply a coincidence. However, the story was picked up by traditional news outlets and it appears Ford decided to back down.

As noticed by The Detroit News, Ford Chief Communications Officer, Mark Truby, tweeted out “The reveal of the all-new Ford Bronco lineup will now happen on Monday, July 13.” He went on to say the “previous targeted date of July 9 unintentionally coincided with O.J. Simpson’s birthday. We wanted to be sensitive and respectful of this concern.”

Of course, the Bronco has leaked like a sieve and we’re already seen countless photos of the upcoming model. As you’re undoubtedly aware, the SUV will feature a retro-inspired design with circular headlights, bulging fender flares and slab-sided bodywork.

The model has also been heavily influenced by the Jeep Wrangler as it will feature a removable roof as well as locking differentials and an electronic sway bar disconnect.

Engine options are slated to include a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder with 270 hp (201 kW / 274 PS) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque.  There could also be a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 with 325 hp (242 kW / 330 PS) and 400 lb-ft (542 Nm) of torque.  Both are expected to be connected to a ten-speed automatic transmission or a seven-speed manual with an off-road focused crawler gear.

The smaller Bronco Sport has also been photographed without camo

Truby’s mention of “Bronco lineup” is also interesting as it suggests the Bronco Sport could debut at the event. It’s based on the Escape, but features a more rugged design.

Engine options are slated to carryover and include a 1.5-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder with 180 hp (134 kW / 182 PS) and 177 lb-ft (240 Nm) of torque.  We can also expect a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder with 250 hp (186 kW / 253 PS) and 275 lb-ft (372 Nm) of torque.

Could The Ford Bronco And Mustang Morph Into Distinct Sub-Brands?

A new report claims that Ford is considering turning the Bronco and Mustang into their own individual sub-brands.

Although the latest-generation Ford Bronco has yet to be released, it is claimed Ford could, down the road, make Bronco and Mustang their own sub-brands and launch several models under each brand. The new sub-brands could form part of the so-called ‘Ford Icons’ group.

“We have to leverage what we’re good at,” a source recently told Autoweek. “What are we good at? Mustangs and trucks. Mustang is a niche product with a great legacy. We need to expand on that legacy. More Broncos is a no-brainer.”

The Ford Bronco will initially be unveiled in two- and four-door guises and then joined by the smaller Bronco Sport, which itself may spawn a new pickup truck. EV and hybrid variants of both can also be expected at some stage in the future, as can electrified versions of the Mustang, the unnamed source added.

“Who knows what the timeframe is in this COVID atmosphere we’re in but yeah, we’re looking at more EVs, hybrids, sedans, crossovers, coupe EVs, convertible EVs, rear-drive, all-wheel drive, you name it. There’s probably going to be a fistfight over a pickup called Mustang, though. The aim is for the Mustang-badged vehicles to be the more performance-oriented of the two sub-brands,” the source added.

While we would not be shocked in the slightest to see Ford make Bronco into its own sub-brand, it could run the risk of alienating enthusiasts if it spins-off the Mustang badge. That being said, it has already softened us up with the Ford Mustang Mach-E, a vehicle that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
